'The Serendipity Vehicle': I made $723.27 from one article.

Hey there Reader!

It's Sunday, which means it's newsletter day.

My favourite day of the week.

I want to try a more consistent structure for the coming newsletters.

So you can expect:

  • 1 long-form idea
  • 1 piece of content to consume
  • 1 quote
  • 1 writing tip/prompt.

Now you know what to expect every week.

Let's get into it.

Have you ever wondered why so many people constantly preach that writing online is 'the thing' everyone should be doing?

It's because of this: Writing is the best tool for networking.

(And it's not for the reasons you expect)

When you share written ideas online, you make it easy for people to find you.

When you hit 'publish' on your content, you get a bunch of your own little personal worker men, that work passively for you.

They ship your ideas out for hundreds/thousands of people to come across.

People will discover you, and give you unexpected opportunities.

That's why I say writing is magic, and it's why our clients get results.

They allow opportunities to find them.

This is called, serendipity.

I mean, think about it. How cool is that?

There are people all over the world, from Indonesia to Australia, to Portugal, to South Africa, who scroll the internet and have the chance to come across you, and your ideas.

Your writing is your superpower.

It's free to do this as well, imagine that!?

Now the part that really amazes me, that David Perell does so well at framing, is that you can write something once, hit publish once, and the little mini-worker men we talked about will work passively for you, for the rest of your life.

Take this article I wrote for example. It's generated me $723.27, and it took me an hour to write, two years ago.

The bank of 100 articles I have published on Medium, work passively for me.

I get comments, shares, and likes, for stuff I wrote three years ago.

(Side note: I'm going to be publishing articles again, as I need to diversify my platforms. I'm committing to 3 articles a week.)

Serendipity happens.

So as you share your ideas out there, serendipity happens.

You meet new people.

They reach out to you.

They want to give you money.

They want to help you, anything!

That's why I'm not living by the motto, ship ideas daily.

I want to make it my tagline, my 'thing'.

So I want to lay out for you my writing blueprint, that I'm maximising this summer so I can max out on this serendipity vehicle.

  1. 5 posts on LinkedIn a week
  2. 3 articles on Medium a week (repurposing content)
  3. 2 email newsletters a week.
  4. DMing 5 new creators every day to network.
  5. Reaching out to large startups to offer my services.
  6. Land as many sales calls as possible.

It all starts with the ideas you have. Write them into an attractive consumable format, and ship them to the world.

You will probably hear crickets for a while, but eventually, it'll start picking up.

Trust me.

Get out there, and ship your ideas out to the world.

1 Quote to ponder:

Writer and general 'creative mind' Austin Kleon, offers some advice for forging a meaningful life.

“You don’t get to pick your family, but you can pick your teachers and you can pick your friends and you can pick the music you listen to and you can pick the books you read and you can pick the movies you see. You are, in fact, a mashup of what you choose to let into your life. You are the sum of your influences. The German writer Goethe said, "We are shaped and fashioned by what we love.”

1 piece of content to consume:

Another podcast for my side-hustling lovers. I couldn't resist jumping on this podcast as soon as it came out. I listened to it in one sitting. It's the second one they've done. This time it was packed full to the brim of value about how to get clients as a writer online. I took obsessive notes and learnt so much that I will implement next week.

1 Writing prompt to journal about:

"What are the genuinely most important 'needle moving' things that I need to nail and do to unlock my goal of making $X a month?"

I'm on a mission to hit $5k/ mo by September. So to be frank and brutally honest with myself, I had to ask this. And it's given me clarity over what I have to do. This works well for blurring out the noise.
